AMD and Sun: Powering The Efficient Enterprise

AMD and Sun

As power demands grow in lockstep with the need to align IT to business goals, so grows the need for getting the most from every watt.

Because IT and business decision-makers are under pressure to turn their departments into innovation centers, IT assets must map to their company’s business objectives. In fact, CIO magazine’s 2006 State of the CIO survey shows that CIOs will shift their focus from controlling costs to aligning IT with business, a significant shift from recent years. Building an efficient IT infrastructure is the first step to that transition from cost center to innovation center.

As server and computing density grows in enterprises, the energy demands for power and cooling become critical factors in total cost of ownership and return on investment. Given the inevitable rise in energy prices, business decision-makers must consider metrics such as the cost of performance per watt to align infrastructure investments with the business value of IT. AMD and Sun have teamed up in an effort to lead the charge toward energy-conscious computing that starts with holistic data center design, includes AMD’s low-power consumption chips, and is carried through to Sun’s x64 servers, which use up to 56 percent less power than alternatives.
